Tarnish Resistance Testing: Potassium Sulfide (K₂S) Test for Silver Jewelry

by Stephanie Lu 03 Apr 2026 0 Comments

For sterling silver jewelry, tarnish resistance testing is a mandatory quality-control step, especially for export-oriented manufacturing.

One of the most widely used methods is the Potassium Sulfide (K₂S) Tarnish Test.

What Is the K₂S Tarnish Test?

Potassium sulfide simulates a sulfur-rich environment, which accelerates silver oxidation and tarnishing. The test allows manufacturers and buyers to evaluate how silver jewelry reacts under harsh conditions in a short period of time.

Why This Test Matters for Brands

  • Verifies the purity and alloy stability of 925 silver
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of anti-tarnish treatments or plating
  • Predicts long-term appearance during storage, shipping, and consumer wear
  • Reduces after-sales complaints related to discoloration

Typical Test Procedure (Industry Standard)

  • Jewelry samples are exposed to a diluted potassium sulfide solution
  • Exposure time is controlled (e.g. 30 minutes to several hours)
  • Surface color change, oxidation level, and uniformity are evaluated
  • Results are documented and archived for batch traceability

Regent Jewelry performs this test before mass production approval, not after shipment.

We are able to provide:

  • Batch-level production records
  • QC inspection reports
  • Tarnish test records linked to specific orders

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
